When it comes to doing things that produce exponential growth, like investing or learning a craft, humans drastically under participate. In fact, only 18% of working age individuals in the United States have an IRA or Keogh account*. People get discouraged because gains aren't readily apparent in the short-term and we naturally lack the capacity to think in anything other than linear progress.
"Informality" is a misnomer in that the "in-" denotes "lack of formality" as a negative term. But lack of formality is a good thing because it cuts the unimportant aspects of a situation. To be formal is an attempt to influence other's interpretation of you in sight of a more important goal. Corporate America makes people dress business professional because companies profit off their talent seeming more competent than they actually are. Militaries use uniforms to make their military appear more deadly. The actual important skills here are business competency and tactile combat ability, but, if you've ever been in a corporate office or observed an ROTC practice and pierced the veil of formality, you know that neither of those objectives are regularly achieved.
